Construction and Improvements on EWC Campus this Fall
President Claudette H. Williams, Ed.D. announced the progress of numerous construction and improvement projects on EWC’s campus.  After completing assessments and reviewing bids from contractors, President Williams and her administration are moving forward with plans to address over 20-years of deferred maintenance on EWC’s campus, utilizing the generous $1 million donation from Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ward.  <Full Story>


EWC's CLIMB Program Offers Online Classes
Edward Waters College's CLIMB (Credentials for Leadership in Management and Business) program now offers online classes.  CLIMB and CLIMB:ONLINE are nontraditional programs in Edward Waters College’s Division of Professional Programs, which serve adults age 23 and older who already have completed one and a half years or more of college, with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better, and who would like to complete their bachelor's degree.  EWC is currently accepting applications for the fall 2008 CLIMB class, so call or email today!  For more information on the CLIMB program, click here.

EWC to host First Annual North Florida HBCU Hall of Fame Ceremony
The alumni of Edward Waters College, Bethune-Cookman University, Florida A & M University, Savannah State University, and Florida Memorial University cordially invite you to the First Annual North Florida HBCU Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The ceremony will take place on Friday, September 12, 2008, at 6 p.m. in the Adams/Jenkins Sports Complex on the campus of Edward Waters College at 1859 Kings Road, Jacksonville, FL. As a part of this year’s inaugural event, alumnus Roy Mitchell (EWC class of ’63) will be posthumous inductee of this year’s hall of fame class. Dress for the occasion is business dress/casual and your HBCU colors are welcome as well. An advance contribution of $25.00 is required. A gentleman, scholar and alumnus homegoing
Dr. Roy I. Mitchell (1941-2008), alumnus and friend of Edward Waters College passed away July 28, 2008.  Dr. Mitchell was a dedicated educator and long time mentor and role model to our area youth.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from Edward Waters College, a committed alumnus, he served as the president of the National Alumni Association. 

 

Dr. Mitchell was born in Byronville, GA and resided in Jacksonville.  He attended Matthew W. Gilbert Junior-Senior High School, Class of 1959.  He won two scholarships to Edward Waters College where he earned his bachelor’s degree.  He was a scholar athlete with the highest GPA.  After receiving his bachelor’s he went into the Army for two years.  Upon returning from the military, he was aspired to continue his education, he enrolled in Florida A&M University and earned his master’s degree and ultimate his doctorate in education from Florida Atlantic University. 

A teacher, counselor, dean of students, vice principal and principal, Dr. Mitchell served in leadership roles for Paxon and Eugene Butler Middle Schools followed by positions at Lee and Raines High Schools. 

Dr. Mitchell paved the way for African-American students at the University of Florida when he became the first African-American administrator from 1969 to 1971 as director of minority affairs. 

Dr. Mitchell continued to be active in the community.  He was a charter member of Chi chapter Omega Psi Phi fraternity and a board member of the Project Reach Foundation, a resource that assist 33 challenged schools find funding to improve students’ performance.

He retired in 2003 from the Duval County Public School System.

EWC’s Upward Bound Program Extends Eligibility of Free Summer Residential Program  

Students from two additional high schools, A. Philip Randolph and Andrew Jackson, are now eligible for the program.

Edward Waters College’s Upward Bound (UB)
program is offering a free, six-week, summer residential program to local 9th and 10th grade students from A. Philip Randolph, Andrew Jackson, Raines and Ribault high schools.  The program began on June 15, but it’s not too late to sign up for the remainder of the program, which runs through July 25. 

Participants will experience a curriculum of academic enrichment, tutoring assistance, field trips and a complete college life experience with on-campus living.  The program is available to 50 students.  For more information on eligibility requirements, call 904.470.8290 or 904.470.8054 today.

Edward Waters College Alum Elected as 130th Bishop of AME Church
Edward Waters College alum, Reverend Dr. John F. White, was elected and consecrated as the 130th Bishop to serve in the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Office of Ecumenical and Urban Affairs on July 11, 2008 during the AME Church’s 2008 General Conference – 48th Quadrennial Session.  

Dr. White is on a mission to SERVE (Spiritual Enrichment and Revival through Vision & Empowerment) by concerning himself with and caring for all of God’s children – the haves and the have-nots.  He has led the growth and transformation of many AME churches throughout his ministry, including two in Jacksonville – New Bethel and Greater Grant Memorial. 

Dr. White is a graduate of Carver High School in Delray Beach, Florida.  He received a bachelor’s of science degree from Edward Waters College, and not only is Dr. White a graduate of EWC, he also served the college as assistant professor of philosophy.

Dr. Joseph Kennedy Publishes Chapter in Book

EWC Presented Empty Ashtray Award by Smoke-Free Jacksonville
On Thursday, May 22, Edward Waters College (EWC) received the Empty Ashtray Award from the Smoke-Free Jacksonville Coalition.  The award is given to local organizations, such as colleges and hospitals, which have taken steps to make the city smoke-free by implementing and sustaining smoke-free campuses. <Full Story>

Charles Moreland, EWC Alum, Servant Leader in the Jacksonville Community
Some people are lucky enough to know at a very young age what they want to be when they grow up. That’s certainly the case for Division Chief of Rescue Charles Moreland of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD).   “I was one of those kids who always wanted to be a fireman,” he said and recalled many trips he and his mother made to the Haydon Burns Public Library. <Full Story>

Legendary actor Clifton Davis to speak at EWC Commencement

The Edward Waters College Board of Trustees and College officials are pleased to announce Dr. Clifton Davis as the Commencement Ceremony speaker for the 2007-2008 academic year. Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the John Hurst Adams and Jimmy R. Jenkins Community Sports and Music Center. More than 110 students are expected to graduate.

Celebrating Ivery Black's Life 
On Wednesday, July 9, Edward Waters College welcomed the family, friends and colleagues of Ivery L. Black in the Milne Auditorium as they celebrated his outstanding and purposeful life.  Mr. Black passed away on June 29 in Houston, Texas.  Although he lived in Houston for more than 40 years, Mr. Black was born and raised in Jacksonville.  He attended Edward Waters College and played on the football team.  Mr. Black not only played on the football team, he led the EWC Tigers to three conference titles in four years and was selected to join Edward Waters College's Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding athletic accomplishments at EWC.    

As part of Mr. Black's legacy, his family started a scholarship fund for EWC students.  The Ivery L. Black Scholarship Fund will provide young adults with the opportunity to attend our historic college and to make their indelible marks on the College and the city of Jacksonville, just as Mr. Black did.  If you or anyone you know would like to donate to the Ivery L.
